At times, when our closest friends and family are upset and dealing with depression, we cannot figure out what to tell them. On the same note, we die to console them and want to do or say anything in order to make them feel better. But, we are not in their shoes, and there is nothing much we could do other than letting them know that we are there for them. It could be tough to decide what to say as you don’t have the solution to their troubles but here are few things which might help:
“If you tell me how you are feeling, I might understand you, and this will make you feel lighter.” It will let the person be open to you and express their emotions, as they might be trying to deal with them all by themselves and it leads to more depression.
“If you don’t want to talk about it, I am still going to be there in order to make you laugh as much as I can.” Sometimes, all the other person needs are for you to stay by their side and make them think about things other than their problem. The World is bigger than our problems, but we tend to forget it while struggling with our own.
“Even if it doesn’t feel it is going to be okay, it would.” Every bad phase takes time to go, and there are days when you undergo emotions of doubts that it wouldn’t ever be alright. This is when you need to make sure by one of your friends; that life moves on, and in the end, it is going to be okay.
“Take your time as no one is rushing you to feel better.” At times, all a person needs to know is that it’s okay for them to feel low. Bad times are a part of life, and it may take some time to get over the misery. Even though, society expects you to feel better already doesn’t mean that it is easy. So, it’s alright, if they need to take a bit more time to heal.
“Take pride in your small victories, because small victories lead to bigger ones. Did you get out of bed? Sometimes that deserves an inner self-five.” If they have suffered a loss and are still able to get through the day effectively, it deserves a cheer. They must be supported and told that they are doing good and they will get better.
“Some days you’ll have setbacks, but just know that tomorrow is a new day with new possibilities.” When setbacks fall upon us, we wonder if life will get any better. The truth is, it does. Every day an opportunity knocks on your door, and you can make full use of it.
“I care about you.” A small sentence like this would help them know that they are not alone. It would assure them that there are others who care about you and want you to feel better. This helps them in the realization that they need to get back up for the sake of others, at least.
“I’ll come with you if you need support – even if it’s just to the supermarket.” When they are in no position to carry on in their lives, they need to be taken out. They need the support to live their life, even if it involves buying groceries where they can interact with anyone else.
“You’re not wrong for feeling the way you do, and no one blames you for it.” People often start feeling guilty for being too depressed for too long. It is because they get the pressure from surroundings to continue with their life and not sit in their homes being all gloomy. But, we must assure them that they are not wrong for feeling the way they do.
“What activity would you like to do?” There is a lot one can do to overcome depression, but if no one is around to guide them, they can forget about what they enjoy to do. If you are there to encourage them to indulge in their hobbies, it will help them recover.
And in the end, just being there for the person, holding their hand without uttering a word is enough to let them know, you are there through their thick and thin.
