What does it mean when someone says you are a deep thinker? What does it mean to think deeply? How does the person think deeply? Is there another type of thinking, opposite to deep?
It is an old and ingrained opinion that thinkers or wise people think that they are deep thinkers and of their emissaries that they are deep thoughts. What does that mean?
We will investigate in this article the syntagma “deep thinker” and try to explain it closer to find out what that means.
“Deep Thinking”- The figure of Depth-Decay through the well
Since Aristotle and Platon thinking is something separated from our world, beyond the physical world, or beneath the surface. Deep thinking is something that takes us from the surface to the depths.
As Lewis Carroll presented with Alice falling into a well (again a figure of depth) she discovers the whole new world beneath her feet (again, beneath the surface).
Thought draws us into an inner adventure like Alice in Wonderland and takes us to wanderings and depths (earth, water, anything deep)
Deep thinking is discovering a whole new world for us.
According to this understanding, thought is cleansed of everything earthly, corporeal, passionate, which would belong to the living world of humans and animals. The opinion is something that, according to this tradition of thought separates us from the animal and the animalistic instincts in us.
10 Signs Which Reveal That You’re A Deep Thinker
Opposite to a deep thinker is a shallow person. Although the average person is often between these two different edges.
Most people are offended if they are called superficial or shallow, and we say so for people who are not very clever or do not think enough about reality through their fault.
Being a deep thinker is more than just being intelligent. People should not be blamed if they are less intelligent.
The deep thinker is often called a person who spends more time alone with his thoughts and this time is being qualitative, he gets valuable conclusions and becomes more conscious about himself, others, and the world around him.
If you wonder if you are a deep thinker, here are some signs that mark a deep thinker.
1. You are an observant
Deep thinkers are good observers and good listeners. They like to examine facts carefully before making any conclusions or decisions. They have critical thinking skills which they use with logic when forming their opinions. Their opinions are not dogmatic. They are open to innovation and new facts.
They are precious in the age of misinformation, artificial intelligence, fake news, and Google. They do not have blind faith in an automatic process. They think for themselves and rely on their own, double-check facts for themselves.
When a person who is a deep thinker makes a conclusion or decision it is well thought and analyzed and well-grounded with reasons and facts.
2. You are an introvert
More than being in a group or a crowd, introverts like to be alone. They prefer to read a book rather than talking to people. They value solitude more where they can think in peace, than large gatherings and socializing.
3. You look at things from different angles
Deep thinking is also trying to incorporate an external component of “others” into itself, including possible opposite arguments and antithesis. According to Hanah Arendt, this form of thinking, or “interpersonal thought” is the guarantor of the correctness of our opinion.
To form an objective judgment a personal thought has to expose itself to other people’s opinions, which means to try to think as another person and to form possible arguments against your opinion.
This strengthens and deepens our thinking and elevates it to the level of objective interpersonal thinking.
4. You hate small talk
Deep thinkers would rather talk about big world problems and questions than have a small convenient conversation, so-called “small-talk”. Many deep thinkers are quiet and they do not speak if they don’t have anything important to say.
5. You use introspection
If you are a deep thinker you like to analyze everything. From external world objects and events to your inner thoughts and feelings, experiences.
Introspection is spending time in solitude analyzing your thoughts and experiences. Deep thinkers analyze each situation and event from the past or in advance, so they are usually accused of overthinking, intellectualization, or losing the spontaneity of life.
6. You are imaginative
The more you spend time thinking, the more you think, you are less attached to the things around you and you are closer to the source of creative power, and imagination.
The deep thinkers can invent the most beautiful story or the most beautiful picture, because they have descended to the depths of imagination where anything is possible, and they have seen the worlds we see in our dreams sometimes.
These visions deep thinkers have are not always beautiful. They can also imagine disgusting and monstrous things. “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” Goya used to say.
Deep thinkers are playful and child-like. They like to spend time with children because they are similar to them.
7. You love to learn
Deep thinkers never stop learning. They love to read and to learn. They have a passion for knowledge and learning new things and skills. The deep thinker is not a person who knows everything and refuses to learn. It is a sign of a deep thinker that he keeps learning his whole life.
He learns from other people and from books. He is never ashamed of asking a question and admitting that he doesn’t know something. Deep thinkers know their boundaries. They know that we all have some boundaries and that only we can expand these boundaries by expanding our knowledge.
8. You are curious
You can find a deep thinker even among small children. Curiosity is a characteristic of a smart man, a deep thinker, and a child.
He is curious about the world, about other people, and himself. He is not afraid to experiment and investigate. He is curious about science, art, politics, history, literature. He wants to know. Because he knows his limits he knows how many things are there yet to discover, and he is excited about it.
9. You are noticing things that other people don’t
What distinguishes deep thinkers from other people is that they notice things that other people don’t see. They spend a lot of time alone with their thoughts and they have insights about themselves or other people that others can hardly understand, or they need more time for it.
This trait makes them perceptive in everyday life and being more capable of many things that ordinary people are not capable of or require more time to master.
10. You’re an empath
Being a deep thinker leads us often into a deeper knowledge of human nature. Introspection gives us the possibility to learn about our feelings and also allows us to make conclusions about other people’s feelings.
Deeper thinking leads us to transgress the individual boundaries and to put ourselves in “other people’s shoes”.
This is not a purely intellectual process. It involves emotions. Deep thinkers are often empathetic with other people. They can feel what other people feel.
Empathy is crucial for all relationships, and it is the basis of any community. It saves us from egoistic separateness and leads to unity, solidarity, equality. Empaths don’t treat people the way they don’t want to be treated. (So-called “golden rule”)
Power of deep thinking
The power of deep thinking is that people who are deep thinkers are able to resolve complicated problems and they are the ones who are pushing the community towards success, progress, and innovation, to overcome potential problems and crises.
These are often people with vision who inspire others and although they often do not have leadership goals they are true leaders of society. They are teaching with their example and they are making the world a better place. How? They are free spirits who are thinking freely and are aware and awake. By emancipating themselves, they pave the way to a better future. Individual emancipation leads to the emancipation of humanity. This shows us the horizons of a better society.
What Happens When You’re A Deep Thinker And A Sensitive Soul?
Not all deep thinkers are sensitive souls, empaths, introverts… but it is more likely that empaths, introverts, and sensitive souls are deep thinkers who understand the world better and feel its deep core. They understand the essence.
When you are a deep thinker and a sensitive soul, you will respect others and consider other people’s feelings before taking any action or speaking.
Your deeper thinking and sensitivity will turn you towards global universal subjects. It is more likely that sensitive deep thinkers will be concerned by global suffering, affected by misery, suffering, world problems, and injustice that happens at any point in the world.
For deep thinkers, the question of distance is not important. They are equally concerned when a forest burns in the Amazon and when fires break out in Australia, or a tsunami hits some part of the world. They will suffer if anywhere else in the world another person suffers. The suffering and the destruction is something that affects deep thinkers equally: wars, natural disasters, disease, misery, poverty.
